A Cricket Crazy I Was

I had just finished one of my papers the previous day and sat brooding over what could have gone better. I focused on what went wrong rather than preparing for the next paper. But only until afternoon when the next match in the 1996 World Cup Cricket would begin. I reluctantly had my lunch and switched on the TV promising myself I would not stay glued to it for long.

Everything, including my mood and resolution changed in a few minutes when the winners of a certain ‘Best Catch and Run-out’ competition were to be announced. It was a few weeks before that when I decided on which was the best catch and run-out in a certain mid-match competition and wanted to answer the question. Sending through India Post, I knew would be slow and my answers would never reach before the last date, so I had called up my Uncle and asked him if he could fax from his office. He did.

Coming back to the announcement moment, my heart skipped several beats as I waited for the announcements; the judges' choices had matched mine! The second runner up was to be announced first and as the host Charu Sharma picked up the winner from a bunch of post cards, I knew it couldn’t be me! He then announced that he would pick up the first runner up from the bunch of faxes and I breathed a sigh of relief.  He then said it’s from a very far off place and I was almost telling myself that it had to me! In a few seconds, my name flashed across the TV screen and in those days when people paid less heed to privacy, my address too was on the screen. Yes, it was me! Yes, it was me!

I jumped up and down and cried and laughed loud and some of the neighbours thought that the siblings might be at their usual round of fights. I was alone at home and had just me to celebrate with! Not for long though as the phone started ringing...my uncle, my teacher ABD, my friends and relatives all who were watching TV that moment called up to congratulate. I called Baba but by that time the news had already reached him! Yes, it was one of those lucky lucky moments you want to remember for a lifetime.

I became a celebrity of sorts, everywhere I went random people would enquire and talk about it. I made several pen pals then, people who had caught my short address quick and written to me. At times, I would be embarrassed by people asking me if I had received the TV as it took a lot of effort from Baba and my aunt to actually get that coveted prize home. The Videocon 14 inch colour TV still lives in our home. Needless to say I didn’t care much for the First Prize as it was a ticket to Eden Gardens for the semis which I was eventually glad to have not won, thanks to the India-Srilanka outcome.
I don't think I will watch the 2019 Cricket World Cup but once was upon a time 'A Cricket Crazy I Was!

The Fixing Part II

In my endeavour to prove those who believe there is too much of honesty and see what their eyes see and pretend not to notice the obvious, I bring here my thoughts about the Chennai - Pune IPL match last night.
Well it would have been most people's gut feeling that Chennai as a team was much better than Pune and winning that match would be a cakewalk. But as I saw the wickets crumbling I saw that a lot of effort was spent in losing those wickets, an effort spent at losing the match. And Pune won so that it could be read clearly that Chennai was capable of losing too and the other match they won a couple of days back was a hard fought victory.

All the same we still watch, we still sit through midnight to see the madness, to see the celebration...

IPL - Chennai Vs Bangalore Saturday match

Well, my gut feeling was Chennai for this IPL match but somehow I thought Bangalore had a fair chance considering how Gayle and Kohli are both in good form. But anyways I wasn't going to support team Dhoni and as I sat up awake at night, I just had this hope of Bangalore winning! And it seemed to be happening till Dhoni came to bat and hit a few beyond the fence! But the drama continued till the last ball  when 2 runs were required off it. And what appeared to have been a catch and Kohli momentarily celebrating turned out to be the winning run as it was a no-ball. So Chennai did it at the last momenti n what appeared to be a nail-biting finish!

But alas I somehow have forgotten the concept of nail-biting finishes, I miss those days when matches were real! These days every match seems made up and so did this no-ball. A deliberate no ball it seemed and though I don't know why or how RP Singh became the scapegoat but I believe it happens at a bigger level and who gains or loses is not the point here as I think everyone benefits in some way or the other.
There is another theory that I heard about around the same no ball and it was that the relay was delayed to show a made-up no-ball. Smiles!!!

But to me the entire episode of last ball drama is made up, no they did not want to do a super over this time, so they created a new twist in the tale by making it appear that Bangalore had won and then the mother of all twists, a no -ball! All for TRP, lots of money may be and the drama available to a cricket loving nation which alas cannot accept the fixing bit because they all like to believe in their super-heroes be it Tendulkar or Dhoni!!!

At Kotla

Another experience at the stadium and yes we are talking cricket! And this time it was the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. On a hot summer day, we went out to watch the Aus-India match and though there was no great game played, it was fun all the same! Fun because I started with supporting Australia, wore an Australian cricket hat and my friend outplayed me by wearing a green and gold Australian t-shirt! It was also fun because I won a bet, the bet being Sachin's century and I somehow knew it was not happening!  It was also fun when Dhoni got out and we clapped and the people around stared at us. Probably they thought we didn't understand cricket and was there for the fun of it. My friends teased me that I would get bashed for wearing an Aussie hat and cheering for Australia. But normal is boring you see and I am no fan of this current Indian team.

But all the same it was a treat to watch Sachin's entry, the crowd going mad and proving that he is India's favourite even when he's on the verge of his retirement.

I wish they had allowed a camera to capture more of these moments!!! I am definitely happy that I got an opportunity to be there and yes dear Universe thank you!!!

Cricket

Yes, that's my  favourite game. The intensity with which I watch it has diminished since the past few years due to various known and unknown factors but my interest still lives. Here I will try to include stories about the matches I loved and stories about my favourite players. This post will grow day by day and I write I am watching the 3rd OD1 between India and NZ and loving Gambhir's game. I wish for a whitewash...offcourse I have to wait for that(there are 5 matches and not 3)

I don't believe India won the 4th ODI. I didn't watch the match after it was rain delayed. The last thing I knew last night was that even if you go by D/L, NZ will win.

Yes, a whitewash after all - 10/12/2010

So what if we lost the first test against SA? Life is like that; wins and losses :)

Hooked to boxing day test matches - Ashes and Ind/SA.

I hoped for Engaland to make it to number 2 after the Ashes victory. India's drawn series with SA was good enough to retain the number 1 spot but SA should have moved to 3....but that hasn't happened!

Oh! I missed the second ODI against SA. Never hoped for a win here! I woke up in the morning to see an sms from a friend saying 'If you missed it, you missed a lot' and how true it was! I really missed the thrilling 1 run victory but still am not so happy with the batting display in SA. Good luck for the World Cup; try out all your new and old players like a sanity form test. ha ha!
